Updated 15 January 2024

People were supported by a staffing team that knew them well and who treated them with kindness, respect and dignity. Staff understood the importance of gaining consent from people and used their skills, training and knowledge of people to help them communicate with them. People’s independence was promoted safely with staff encouraging people to achieve tasks themselves but remaining close to step in and support if needed. People were given choices each day and told us that they felt in control of their daily lives. The registered manager underpinned this support through auditing and regularly updating people’s care plans and maintaining an overview of people’s care and support needs.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were supported by staff who were caring, knew them well and encouraged them to be independent without placing them at risk. A person told us, “They help me with bits I can’t do, dressing and washing but I can do a lot.” A relative added, “The girls have picked up on her ways and what she likes to do and where she likes to be.” Another relative told how their loved one regained a lot of their independence since moving to the home, “Mum has thrived, she wasn’t at home, she came here first as not managing, she was anxious. They said they couldn’t take her unless she could weight bear so she got out of bed and walked.” People were given opportunities to decide on their daily routines, where they wanted to spend their time, what to wear each day and what to eat and drink. A person told us, “I can get up and go to bed when I want, some people sit out until late. Go to dining area for lunch.” A relative said, “Yes there are activities but she’s happy to stay in her room now – her choice.” Another relative told us, “She says she is happy up there, knows what she's doing, master of her own destiny, clearly happy here as she's thrived. The registered manager complied with guidance relating to visiting during the recent covid-19 pandemic and the home at the time of our visit had no visiting restrictions. A relative told us, “I can come and go as I please now. She arrived here during the pandemic. It was well managed but still difficult.”

Staff confirmed that they treated people they supported with respect and dignity and that they encouraged them to achieve tasks for themselves providing it was safe. Comments from staff included, “People get the support they need. It’s a good staffing team” and “Encouraged all of the time, give people choices, what to wear for example.” Staff told us they provided people with choices each day relating to all aspects of their lives. For example a staff member told us, “(name of person) likes a certain type of food so we get it for them. Has strict habits, an amazing person, very clear about what he wants to do.”

The registered manager audited care plans and risk assessments regularly and any changes in people’s routines, their wishes, likes and dislikes were recorded and updated. For example, each person had a nutrition and hydration plan that was monitored and updated when needed. Staff routinely spent time with people when not engaged in core tasks. We observed several pleasant interactions between staff and people with staff being polite and engaging.
