People told us staff were kind, compassionate, caring and supported them to maintain their independence. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

Independence, choice and control

People told us they enjoyed spending time with the staff who they said were kind, caring, patient and knowledgeable. One person told us, " I love it here, it’s gorgeous. I say to them it’s like a 5-star hotel.” Another person said, “I choose what I want to do each day, they let me get on with it.” And “They help me with my meals and with any activities. Some days I shower myself other days they help me, whatever I need. They are very polite, kind and hardworking.” People were supported to maintain their independence as far as they were able. People told us they chose what they were going to wear, how they would spend their day and felt well cared for and looked after. Everyone we spoke with commented positively on the service and care provided by the staff team at Stratfield Lodge Residential Home.

Staff understood the importance of respecting people's rights to privacy, dignity and in ensuring they were supported. This helped to maintain a level of independence. Staff spoke knowledgably about people, their likes and dislikes and how they preferred their care and support to be given. A member of staff told us, “[Person] is very active, we are always promoting their independence by prompting them to do aspects of their own personal care. We make sure they are safe. We encourage [person] to help us and they are happy to do that. It makes [person] feel so happy to help.” Another staff member said, “Its making sure people keep as independent as possible where they can. It’s about making the most of the good days. They choose their clothes, if they cannot verbalise they will point, so they can choose. It's important they know what they are going to wear.”

Staff knew people well, provided support and care in a calm, friendly and unrushed manner. Staff took time to chat to people when people sought staff out, checking they had everything they needed and providing choice in their everyday lives. Staff spent time discussing topics with people that were important to them and that increased their sense of wellbeing.

People's care plans and records had up to date information to promote and maintain their independence. Care and support plans covered all areas and included night time preferences, mobility, communication and relationships. Staff knew people very well and regularly met and spoke with their relatives to ensure they were all kept up to date with people's changing health and support needs.
