Safe environments
At the assessment on 8 November 2024, we found the practice had made sufficient improvements to comply with regulation 12:
Fire exits were clear and well signposted. The premises were clean and work surfaces that were previously cluttered were now clear. Hazardous wiring arrangements that had been observed at the previous inspection had been cleared. We saw that hazardous substances were clearly labelled and stored safely.
The practice had completed an external fire risk assessment in line with legal requirements. The management of fire safety was effective. The practice had installed emergency lighting and a wired fire alarm system. Systems were in place to check fire equipment on a weekly and monthly basis and logs of these checks were maintained.
Safe and effective staffing
At the assessment on 8 November 2024, we found the practice had made the following improvements to comply with regulation 12 Safe care and treatment: The practice had implemented systems to monitor staff training and processes were in place to review this training needs at regular intervals. We saw evidence that clinical staff completed continuing professional development required for their registration with the General Dental Council. This included completing training in sepsis awareness, legal and ethics and level 2 safeguarding. A system was in place for newly appointed staff to have a structured induction. We saw evidence that staff had completed fire safety training since the last assessment.
Infection prevention and control
At the assessment on 8 November 2024, we found the practice had made the following improvements to comply with regulation 12 Safe care and treatment: The practice appeared clean and there was an effective schedule in place to ensure it was kept clean. Hazardous waste was segregated and disposed of safely. The external bin was locked and was now secured appropriately to discourage vandalism and theft. We observed the decontamination of used dental instruments, which aligned with national guidance. Manual scrubbing and ultrasonic decontamination were still carried out in the surgeries, and this was done in line with guidance.
Water temperatures for water used for the scrubbing of used dental instruments was being monitored. Clean instruments were being pouched before being stored in the surgeries, local anaesthetic cartridges were stored appropriately and vulnerable to contamination. The practice had policies and procedures in place to ensure clinical waste was segregated and stored appropriately in line with guidance. More specifically, the disposal of gypsum was carried out in accordance with Health Technical Memorandum 07-01, Safe and sustainable management of healthcare waste.
