Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. Staff spoke to and about people in a kind and respectful way. One person told us, “The staff are very helpful and very friendly. No favourites, they are all lovely. They are helpful and if you ask for anything they take the time to answer you.” The registered manager shared many compliments they had received from people and their relatives, the theme was in respect of staff kindness.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. We observed staff speaking with and supporting people in their preferred way. For example, a person lip read, staff ensured the person was able to understand what they were saying and gave the person time to respond. Staff knew people and their personalities well, a person became anxious if there were sudden changes to their preferred routine, staff made sure the person was aware in advance if there were any events to alleviate the anxieties. People’s care records reflected their individualities and personalities.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff constantly offered choices to people, such as, what they wished to wear and eat. People were supported to retain autonomy as much as possible, for example, their bedroom furniture had pictorial references of what was in their drawers and wardrobes. Staff gave examples of how they promoted independence, a staff member told us, “I knock on the door making sure they (people) are happy for me to come in. We let them do what they can do, it’s a case of asking them what they want help with, we try to maintain their independence and dignity.” People were involved in shaping the activity schedule which included physical, mental and artistic sessions. External entertainers came into the service and people were able to go out to the local town and beach.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff respond to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. We observed staff attended to people’s requests quickly and with kindness. Staff observed people and responded to signs of health deterioration. A healthcare professional was at the service during our visit, they and staff worked collaboratively to ensure a person was receiving the right support and to ensure appropriate equipment was in place to help them.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Systems were in place to support staff and promote their well-being. There was a staff member of the month initiative, the provider and registered manager placed value on the staff team. Staff told us they enjoyed working at the home and they felt supported. A staff member said, “It’s the best care home I have worked in.”
