Our view of the service

We visited Chandler Court on 20 and 27 June 2024. Chandler Court is a nursing home for up to 81 people, including those with dementia or a cognitive impairment. There were 56 people using the service at the time of our site visit. We carried out this assessment in response to concerns received about low staffing levels, medicines errors and lack of nursing cover. We looked at 28 quality statements in the safe, caring, responsive and well led-key questions. During our inspection we found that there were enough suitably qualified staff to meet people’s needs. Medicines were administered safely, and there were appropriate levels of nursing staff. Risks to people had been assessed and measures put in place with guidance for staff to mitigate the risk of harm. There were systems in place to monitor the quality and safety of the service. The service had a clear vision and plan for improvements, and demonstrated enthusiasm to learn. The assessment was carried out by 2 inspectors, 1 specialist advisor and an Expert by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. We used the information the provider sent us in the provider information return (PIR). This is information providers are required to send us annually with key information about their service, what they do well, and improvements they plan to make. We spoke with 4 people and 5 relatives of people. We spoke with 6 members of staff including nursing and care staff, agency staff, the relief manager and the operations support manager.

People's experience of this service

We received mixed but mostly positive feedback from people and their relatives about the service. Some people told us they preferred regular staff as the agency staff did not always know people as well as regular staff did. The registered provider significantly reduced the use of agency prior to our inspection, and continued recruitment in order to increase the number of regular staff. People told us they felt safe and were involved in the planning of their care. People told us and we observed that the service was always clean and staff kept people’s rooms clean and tidy. People, their relatives and staff told us the management team were supportive and approachable, and there was a positive culture within the home. There were no restrictions on visitors to the home, and friends and relatives were seen coming and going throughout the days of the assessment. Our observations included the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.
