Feedback from people and relatives showed that people lived their lives according to their wishes and preferences. Daily logs demonstrated people were given choice and control over their daily lives. Staff interacted with people with kindness and respect. We observed a calm and relaxed atmosphere in the home. Access to activities promoted people’s independence, health, and wellbeing. People were supported to maintain relationships and networks important to them.

Independence, choice and control

People were supported by staff to remain as independent as possible. One person told us, “I can usually do what I want, I can get up and go to bed when I like”. People were supported to maintain relationships that were important to them and to see friends and family. Relatives confirmed that they were able to spend time with their family members.

The lifestyle lead explained to us how people had benefited from taking part in the activities on offer. “We offer plenty of activities, tailored to residents through all floors. We recently had a 6th home birthday party including entertainment, party bags, crowns, crosswords. We went to visit people in all rooms, so everyone was involved. We have regular church service, singers and animals pets. We established relationship with Bromsgrove school, we organise board games every week, and baby groups come in. Currently we have 2 newborn to 10 months and toddlers groups”. Staff told us that people were looking forward to activities, and relationships built with children had a significant impact on people’s well-being.

We observed staff constantly interacting with people and engaging people in meaningful conversations about their lives and experiences. Staff supported people to make decisions about their care. They understood people's communication needs which were documented in the care plans. Staff treated people with respect and provided care and support in a dignified way. Staff supported people to take part in activities and were attentive to their needs.

People’s care and support plans guided staff on how to promote their independence, choice and control. People were enabled to maintain and develop relationships with those close to them and there were no restrictions on visiting the service. Any equipment required to support people to be independent was recorded in the care plans and risk assessments.
