Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People told us they felt empowered as individuals and were treated with kindness, dignity, and respect. People talked about being encouraged to make decisions about their care. One person told us, “They have asked us for menu suggestions, and we are going to have a meeting later to agree the menu.” Another person said, “I love all the fun activities and having a laugh and joke with everyone.”

Staff spoke with care and compassion about the people they supported and demonstrated a shared commitment to providing good care. One staff member said, “It’s important people are happy and enjoy living here.”

During our visit, staff were attentive to people and had clearly developed good relationships with them. When someone had difficulty understanding what was said, the staff member took the time to explain and involve them in the conservation. We saw people participating in a range of activities such as gardening, having their hair done, enjoying a game of cards together and a singer who visited in the afternoon. During lunch we saw staff promoting people’s independence and offering people a choice of meals.

People were involved in planning their care and support. Records captured their preferences and needs. This included the time they wished to get up in the morning, how they wanted to be supported by staff and what the person could do for themselves to maintain their independence. Care records reflected people’s religious beliefs, gender identification and disability. Staff spoken with could tell us about people’s beliefs and preferences and knew how to best support them.
