Assessing needs

Score: 3

Staff knew people well and how they communicated their needs and wishes. Staff supported people to take part in a wide range of activities according to their interests and wishes. One member of staff said, “If people want to do something we try to make it happen.”

People were involved in assessments and reviews of their care and support. Relatives told us they were involved in care planning and reviews of care. The registered manager and staff team had worked in innovative ways with one person, who had health and behaviour challenges, to transform their quality of life and wellbeing in a positive way.

Each person had a care plan which was personal to them. Care plans gave staff the information they required to support people in a person-centred way.

People were offered choices in a way that was meaningful to them. Where people lacked the capacity to make specific decisions staff acted in their best interests and consulted with relevant people. Relatives told us staff involved them in decisions where appropriate. On the day of the site visit an independent advocate was visiting. This helped to make sure people’s views were always considered.

Staff knew how to support people to make choices and involved them in decisions about their care and support. Staff were able to tell us how people used verbal and nonverbal communication to express their views and choices. Staff had a good knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 which helped to make sure people’s rights were protected.

The provider carried out regular audits to make sure unnecessary restrictions were not in place for people.
