Independence, choice and control
People did not always feel they were involved with choices about their care and support.
Care workers explained they supported people to make choices about their day-to-day care and how it was provided. A care worker commented, “I give them the choice for whatever they want I don’t choose for them; I go with that. I give them space to think and have a choice. We don’t force them. Just speaking to them. I go with their choice.”
People’s care plans included information on how they wanted their care needs met, their preferences and wishes. The care plans also included information on the person’s goals and outcomes for all the aspects of the care being provided and how the person could be supported to maintain their independence.
