Assessing needs

Score: 3

People receiving support gave mixed feedback relating to their involvement with planning their care. Some people stated their care needs had been discussed but other people explained they felt they had not been involved in choices and decisions about their care.

Care workers said that care plans provided the information they required to meet people’s care needs. To ensure they had up to date information on how to support people they regularly reviewed people’s care plans and risk assessment.

An assessment of the person’s care and support needs were completed when the care package was received by the provider. A summary of the support the person required was developed and further assessments carried out within the first 48 hours of care starting to develop the care plan and risk assessments.

People provided a range of comments when asked if they were given choices and consented to their care. The feedback from 2 people confirmed they did discuss the care being provided. The other people and relatives we spoke with felt that they were not always asked for consent before care and some people felt they were not given choices in relation to meals and care activities.

Care workers had completed training on the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Care workers told us they understood how to support people to make choices when they received care.

The provider had a process to assess a person’s mental capacity to see if they were able to consent to the care they received.
