People were supported by staff to remain as independent as possible. People had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing. The management team ensured there were staff available to support people to access the community and attend clubs and events which were of interest to people.

Independence, choice and control

People were supported by staff to remain as independent as possible. A person told us, “Staff who are here they know when I need help and when I don’t”. People had access to activities and the local community to promote and support their independence, health and wellbeing. A person told us how staff had supported them to order arts and crafts supplies online which was of interest to them. People were supported to maintain relationships with friends and families.

Staff told us how they support people to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions. One staff member said, “We [staff] direct them [people], and help them to make choices. We give them options and explain things to them.” Another staff member said, “A lot of the people attend clubs of their choice and if someone tells us that they want to go somewhere, we support them to go out and do what they asked to do.” Staff told us they felt able and confident to speak with the manager to suggest new opportunities and experiences for people to try.

We observed people were supported by staff to make choices about how they wished to spend their time. Some people chose to spend their time in their own accommodation, the communal areas, or out in the community. We saw staff encouraged and supported people to gain confidence in maintaining their independence.

The management team ensured there were staff available to support people to go out in the local area and attend clubs and events which were of interest to people. People’s care records detailed their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and interests.
