People were supported as individuals, in line with their needs and preferences. People were involved in planning and reviewing their care so their care plans showed what was important to them. People were also actively encouraged to be involved in broader decisions about the running of the home. The management team were aware of people who were likely to experience inequality and actively listened to make sure people’s care was tailored address this. People were supported to follow interests and to take part in activities that were socially and culturally relevant to them.

Person-centred Care

Score: 3

People told us they were involved in planning and reviewing their care. One relative said, “The best thing is that [my family member] is happy. We visit regularly and have a review every month. We go and see the supervisors. They ask if I have any concerns. [My family member] is still capable of saying if she is not happy. I cannot fault them.” Another relative told us, “They have days out. [My family member] went to the pub for the first time in 40 years and she loved it. [My family member] has been to the garden centre, country parks, and plays bingo. It has made a massive difference to her. She saw chicks coming out of the eggs and you should have seen the glee on her face. Now she is living and is happier, she eats really well.” People’s close relatives told us staff kept them up to date about their loved one’s care, including any changes in their health and wellbeing.

Staff were familiar with people’s needs. They told us every person had a communication care plan, which identified their needs in this area and included how the service could support their communication. This helped to make sure people were supported to engage in their care and their views could be heard. The registered manager told us people’s care plans were audited regularly. This helped to make sure plans were up to date, and kept pace with any changes in people’s needs.

We observed staff were confident, communicated effectively and provided effective support to people. Staff showed a good understanding on how to support people living with dementia and people whose speech was limited. People’s care plans included guidance for staff on how to provide personalised care, centred around each person’s specific needs. The registered manager felt some people’s care plans would benefit from further development. Good progress was being made with this, as staff were updating each person’s plan as they were uploaded to the new electronic system.
